"Preach the Gospel and when necessary, use words.” is a famous quote from an anonymous source that Pastor Timothy L. Dotson uses as the philosophy of his life. He is the fourth Pastor of the Haven of Rest Missionary Baptist Church of Chicago Illinois. Reverend Dotson wears a plethora of titles such as Husband, Pastor, Father, Grandfather, Scholar, Preacher, Teacher and Friend. He is an exemplary expositor of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and a visionary with a passion for outreach ministry. His clarion call to the Gospel Ministry crosses ecumenical boundaries. Reverend Dotson is the lineage of a long line of gospel preachers. He was reared in the church and confessed a hope in Christ at the age of 21. He was licensed and ordained into the Gospel Ministry at the Bright Star Church of Chicago. Reverend Dotson served on staff as an Associate Minister for several years before accepting the call to become the Pastor of The Greater New Birth Church on Chicago’s westside.

During his pastoral tenure at Greater New Birth Church, the church membership flourished. The church was a beacon of hope on Chicago’s westside. After serving as Senior Pastor of Greater New Birth for five years, Reverend Dotson and a group of believers organized The Gathering at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church. He led the Gathering at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church for five years, before accepting the call to become the fourth Senior Pastor of the historic Haven of Rest Missionary Baptist Church.

Reverend Dotson is a native Chicagoan and an alumnus of Chicago Vocational High School. He has earned both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degree from Calumet College of Saint Josephs. Pastor Dotson attained his formal theological education from the prestigious McCormick Theological Seminary, where he was conferred the Master of Arts Degree in Ministry with an emphasis on Pastoral Care. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry Degree in Homiletics from the Chicago Theological Seminary. Pastor Dotson was the recipient of the 2021 Reverend Dr. G. Campbell Morgan Award for Excellence in Preaching at the Chicago Theological Seminary.

Reverend Dotson is a lifetime member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. He has always been an advocate for change and Social Justice, with a willingness to speak out for those who have no voice. His concern for the community persuaded him to accept an Adjunct Professor position in the Religious Studies Department at his alma mater Calumet College of Saint Josephs. Reverend Dotson taught a course in Social Justice, in an effort to make the biblical text contextually relevant to today's college students. Pastor Dotson currently serves as a mentor to seminary students in partnership with McCormick Theological Seminary’s experiential learning program.

He has a love and concern for those considered marginalized within the community. During his free time, he has served as a mentor for the Lincoln's Challenge Academy in the interest of empowering kids who have been deemed “at risk.” Pastor Dotson served his country as a United States Marine, and retired from the Chicago Police Department after over twenty years of faithful service in policing.

Pastor Dotson is the devoted husband of over 35 years to the lovely Mrs. Jenise Dotson. He is the father of Timothy Jr., Tiffany and Troy, and the grandfather of Zechariah, Zaiden, and Zander. He works tirelessly to serve both God and His people. Pastor Timothy L. Dotson does his best to, “Preach the Gospel at all times, and when necessary, he uses words.”
